Bout 007 (Video/Action): After the darkness comes a new dawn. (backdated to Thu. 5/5)

[The video feed cuts in mid-conversation, evidently activated accidentally. The gear seems to be hanging from someone's belt, swinging to and fro and showing a grassy area. If you look close enough, you might be able to recognize it as the National Park where the Bug-Catching Contest is held.]

...did I let you talk me into this? [Chie's voice is distinctly displeased.]

Because it'll be good for you! [The second (much more chipper) voice belongs to Rise.] I mean, sure, there are a ton of gross bugs, but you could catch a Butterfree or something! They're cute!

Ugh, I never should've told you about the Yanmega. I guess a butterfly would be... okay, but if you're that set on this, can't I just find someone who already has one and trade for it?

Chie-senpai... [There's a definite huff in Rise's voice -- it's not too hard to imagine her sticking her hands on her hips and pouting stubbornly.] That's not facing your fear, and you know it! And besides, you'll actually get something more out of this than another bug.

[A long-suffering sigh. Chie is tempted to say she doesn't want to face her fear, but she knows better than that.] And what would that be?

... When you win, you'll see~! [IT'S INCENTIVE, CHIE.]

[How about some incentive that involves not chasing around giant bugs.] Alright, alright. Well, let's get back to -- hey, did you hear that?

Huh? [After a quick pause, there's an audible rustling, followed by a faint noise of surprise.] Hey, yeah! I guess we were bound to run into a bug eventually...

Right. Well, here goes nothing... [The camera jostles as Chie steps forward -- and then a big brown blur passes through the view briefly. Chie shrieks.] W-What is that?!

[Chie wasn't the only one who shrieked, and Rise isn't exactly the epitome of calm and controlled when she speaks up a split second later.] I-I don't know! But it was huge and I think those were spi-- ohmygod, that is so not a butterfly!

No kidding! Oh geez, get ready, Suzuka -- aaugh!

[The gear blurs around, for just a few seconds getting a good shot of this -- and then the feed cuts out.]

[About half an hour later, Chie appears on video again, sitting indian-style in the short grass on the outskirts of the park. She's holding a Pokéball and a strange glowing stone in her lap, and Suzuka Gongen is staring at the latter.]

Well, that was... interesting. Looks like you guys saw part of it, but Rise-chan talked me into trying out the Bug-Catching Contest up here. I managed to catch that thing that jumped out at us -- it's called a Pinsir, apparently. [She holds up the Pokéball.] So now I've got a giant stag beetle that tears its prey in half with its horns. Seriously, that's what the Pokédex says! How am I supposed to train it if I can't even bring myself to let it out?

Anyway, the Pinsir won the contest! So at least there's that. I got this thing as a prize. Apparently it's called a Dawn Stone? [She holds it up, and Suzuka Gongen's eyes follow it.] This must be what she was talking about. I think I remember hearing about stones that make Pokémon evolve, but how am I supposed to know who can... use...

[By now she's noticed the way her Snorunt's eyes go up and down as she waves the stone around. She turns to her Pokémon and holds it out.] Did you... wanna try it out?

Snorunt! [Suzuka Gongen eagerly snatches up the Dawn Stone. After an instant, she and the stone begin to glow... and when the glow fades, the former Snorunt has evolved. She bows to Chie with a tinkly:] Froslass.

Whoa... You're gorgeous! Froslass, huh... I was wondering if you had any evolutions. I guess now we know! [Chie grins as she reaches for the Pokégear.] Congratulations!

[ Rise's been using Chie's back as... well, a backrest, with a tired Cleffa in her lap and not looking much better. She does twist her head around to catch a glimpse of the new Froslass. ]

S-see...? That was totally worth it, right?

[Suzuka Gongen definitely believes it was worth it, chirping a cheery "Froslass!" and floating over so Rise can get a better look at her.

Chie, on the other hand...] Ask me that again after I've had a nice long nap.

[ obligingly admiring her with a cheerful victory sign of approval-- though she sags with a sigh two seconds later. ]

I didn't think we'd end up running...

[Suzuka Gongen beams and floats around happily. Oh, she wants to show off to the rest of Chie's team! But she hasn't let them out of their balls yet.]

Yeah, well, I didn't think we'd meet a bug that big just running around the contest. [Shudder. This may not have done much for her phobia just yet.]

[ well, Tiramisu will happily wave her little stubs around. So pretty, Suzy! ]

Same here... that's just dangerous!

[D'aww. She ruffles Tiramisu's hair affectionately. I wonder what you'll look like when you evolve?]

Seriously. And now I gotta figure out what to do with it. [Staring at that Pokéball again.]

Besides name it and train it?

[ ... not that she blames you, Chie. ]

... I could just let it go. It'd probably be happier that way, right?

After all of that, it feels like it'd be a waste.

Well... yeah, but... [She is trying to find an excuse to get rid of this thing, why will you not help her. :( She stares at the ball.] God, I don't know how the heck I'm supposed to train it without running and screaming.

W-well, you're its trainer now... so maybe it'll be nicer.

Hopefully. First thing I'm doing is teaching it not to jump out at people.

[Have a 10-year old, effeminate kid in a dress staring at you two.]

That thing is... is...

Hm? I guess she's called a Froslass now, apparently.

[Suzuka Gongen does a little twirl for the camera to show off.]

Oh. She's pretty, too.

[But he's more interested in the ball she's holding.]

The Pinsir thing is really cool.

[Oh, you mean that thing. Chie can't help but shudder a little.] You think so? I've... never been a big fan of bugs, personally.

Are ya scared of them or something?

[There's not really any accusations in there. Just curiosity.]

[Sighhhh. There's not much point trying to hide it, at this point.] Yeah. Have been since I was young. And the ones here in Johto are so much worse than regular bugs...

I dunno about that. I never got to see bugs til I got here.

[EVERYTHING IS FASCINATING.]

If you're really scared of it, just think of it like a clothespin with a silly face.

... That's what those things evolve into?

Looks like it! She needed the Dawn Stone, though, I guess.

Was that really important?

Yeah, I don't think she would've evolved at all without it! Or... maybe she would have had a different one? I dunno, Pokémon are kinda confusing!

Hmmm... I wonder what mine'll turn into then. I'll have to get back to you on it.

Yeah, I'll be interested to hear it! Has it hatched yet? Probably not, it's only been a few days...

Not yet, but I've been keeping it warm.

... I never expected something like a Snorunt to evolve into something like that... It looks elegant.

Yeah, I was kinda surprised too! But she sure seems happy about it.

[Indeed, Suzuka Gongen beams at the camera and bows to Hinagiku.]

May I ask as to where this contest is?

She's always been the polite type, yep. Kinda makes me wonder if I should learn a thing or two. [A little laugh.]

It's up north of Goldenrod! The, uh, Johto National Park. They hold it Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, I think. Takes a while to get up here and back, though, so make sure you've got the time.

Goldenrod, was it? [She sighs.] It might take a while for me to actually get there, I believe...

That looked terrifying! I'm glad you're both okay.

[Nodnod.] No, but it does turn into a twenty-foot giant serpent. And it can fly! I'm not even sure how she does it...

I do! Her name's Goldie, although... she's blue now that she evolved, so... Anyway, yeah, it was a real shock when it finally happened. But it was in the middle of that whole bug invasion last month, so she really saved my bacon.

Do you wanna meet her? I had to put her in her ball for the contest, but they gave them all back... [She fumbles at her belt for it.]

Yeah, it is a little tough, when you're not sure what's gonna happen! She still seems to like the name, though, so I guess I'll just leave it.

Alright, then! Come on out, Goldie! [She tosses the Pokéball to the ground a good distance away, then picks up the gear to aim it at the massive serpentine figure released. Goldie cranes her head down to look at the camera, seeming oddly docile for such an imposing creature.]

[ Souji's back at the centre, working his ass off but he's on a break sooooo; ]

Congrats on the win, Chie. [ A smile. ] And some Pokemon really do look completely different when they evolve.

[Chie is not certain how happy she is about the win, but...] Thanks, Souji-kun. Boy, isn't that the truth? Shadow turned from a little ghost-thing into a stuffed doll, and Goldie... Wow. You've got a Gyarados, right? Did you see that evolution?

[ A nod. ]

Yeah, completely different than a Magikarp. I take it that Goldie evolved into a Gyarados then?
