Bonus Bout 001: Why did it have to be bugs? (backdated to Fri. 4/8)
Phobias could be a funny thing, sometimes (if by "funny" what you mean is "terrifying"). You could think you had yours totally under control, until something new happened and it all came back to hit you at once.
And the problem with entomophobia in particular was that, well, bugs in Johto weren't like bugs in Japan. They were bigger, much bigger. They were far more intelligent. They were far more dangerous.
And on that Friday afternoon, in the woods just south of Violet City, they were mad.
------
If she hadn't been terrified out of her wits, Chie would have been embarrassed by how girly the shriek she let out sounded. But she wasn't even close to thinking straight. Her sneakers skidded in the mud as she ran blindly, her Pokémon scrambling to keep up with her. Behind her the swarm of bugs approached -- huge and horrifying. They wanted to kill her, that was the only thought running through her head, they wanted to and they could...
A giant spider crashed down from the treetops to her left, and with another embarrassing yelp, she veered to the right. But in her panic she didn't see the tree root growing up out of the dirt, and her foot caught on it. She took a nasty tumble, rolling until she slammed into a tree trunk, then backing up against the trunk in terror, Goldie clutched in her arms. The Spinarak hissed at her, rattling its mandibles, and then leapt --
Directly into a blast of flame. Chie looked up to see that Rinty had leapt to her defense, hackles raised as he growled at the enemy. "(How dare you try to hurt our trainer!)" the Houndour snarled. "(She took care of me when I didn't have anywhere to go. Don't you dare think we'll let trash like you anywhere near her!)"
"(T-That's right!)" Sandy stood beside him, readying a Rollout attack. "(S-She didn't have to take us in, but she didn't even hesitate! Now it's, it's our turn to be strong for her!)" Just before attacking, he pointed dramatically at the Yanma he was aiming for. "(Just who the hell do you think we are?!)"
Yosuke was already attacking a maddened Ledyba with his own Rollout, leaping into the battle without hesitation just like his namesake would. In the same instant a Skorupi lashed out at Shadow with its tail, but she took the blow without flinching, facial expression remaining flatly amused. "(Oh, am I supposed to cower in fear now?)" she sneered, a black ball of energy forming between her tiny hands. "(If anyone should be frightened here, it's you. Let me show you... what real fear means!)"
Finally Suzuka Gongen stepped forward, knocking an entire crowd of bugs away with an ice-cold blast of wind. Her serious words were a sharp contrast to her cute appearance and voice. "(I pity you for what you've had to go through... but that doesn't mean I'll show mercy. Your rage and hatred can't hope to compare to the bond we all share. When we're done with you, there won't even be a Shed Skin left!)"
As her team struck against the threatening bugs that surrounded them, Chie began to calm down enough to think. Her Pokémon had moved like lightning to protect her, without so much as a word from her, and that show of their love brought a weak smile to her face. "Alright... We can do this, guys. Try to clear a path, and then we'll start running again!"
But in her arms... That blank, derpy expression, the one that never under any circumstances left a Magikarp's face... left Goldie's face. Everyone was fighting for Chie, everyone except her, because she'd been so lazy with her training. Her trainer had worked so hard with her, but she'd just blown it off, and now she was completely useless...
Goldie's usual blank stare was replaced with a look full of determination. She wriggled out of Chie's arms and flailed her way forward, striking a nearby Pineco with her Tackle. "Whoa, hey, careful, Goldie!" Chie yelped, reaching forward to try to catch her without actually going near the insects.
Shadow's reaction was pretty similar: "(What are you doing, weakling?)" She knocked the Pineco out with a hasty Shadow Ball before it could explode. But Goldie didn't answer, only dashing forward to attack another bug, and forcing Shadow to take that one out too. "(Idiot! Are you trying to get yourself --)"
But the half experience from those two quick battles was enough. Goldie, who had been teetering on the edge of level 19 for what seemed like forever, finally reached 20. And began to glow. Friend and enemy alike turned to look at the shining Magikarp, in the split second before
she
GREW.
It was unlike any evolution Chie had yet witnessed. In an instant Goldie grew from three feet to over twenty, an enormous serpentine body crashing down to the ground, tail circling around to surround Chie and her partners and block out the oncoming swarm. The newly evolved Gyarados lifted her head up, glaring down at the Pokémon that suddenly looked so much smaller than they had before. She breathed in slowly...
And then let out a mighty roar as her head came crashing down. "(GET LOST!!)"
------
... And then Chie locked herself in her hotel room for a week.
[OOC: This wasn't recorded with the gear or anything, so there's no need for anyone to tag, because seriously, three weeks backdated? There are limits, Shay. But I just couldn't get the scene out of my head, so I wanted to at least finally share it.
And just to let everyone know: Chie will have an egg post up tomorrow morning/midday, for everybody who responded to the OOC post from a while back! Castmates, I'm assuming she hitched a ride with Souji et al on his way back through Violet to Goldenrod, because if I have to make another catch-up post with her I'm probably going to cry.]
